1 Answer:
Hello, good morning.
Cramps are a condition in which muscles experience sudden strong contractions and tension. Muscle cramps can be caused by:
Excessive use of muscles
Inadequate blood supply, for example during exercise
Lack of minerals such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium
Exposed to cold temperatures
Side effects of drugs, such as diuretics, statins, and steroids
Pressure on the spinal cord
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
Multiple sclerosis
Things that can be done to relieve muscle cramps include:
Stop activities when cramps occur
Relax the muscles by moving the cramped body part and doing light stretches
Compress or soak the body with warm water
Consume foods high in minerals, such as nuts, vegetables, and fruit.
If the cramp is causing unbearable pain, then you can try taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and/or giving pain relief gels to the sore muscles.
Generally, muscle cramps are not serious and do not require special treatment, but if the complaints do not subside, it is advisable to see a doctor. The doctor may perform blood lab tests or other investigations if necessary.
Hope it helps,
Regards. Dr. Denisa
