What Is The Maximum Dose Of Folic Acid For Pregnant Women?
, I consume folic acid supplement 1000mcg +400 mcg (from 2 different types of supplement brands) from consumption 9w-pregnant now 13. Is it safe? What is the maximum consumption of folic acid for pregnant women? thank you
Good afternoon, thanks for the question
Supplementation of folic acid since the beginning of planning a pregnancy is crucial because it plays a role in the process of formation of the nervous system from the beginning of fetal development in the womb. Folic acid supplementation significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
According to the CDC, a pregnant woman requires at least 400 mcg of folic acid daily intake obtained from food consumed or from supplements. Consumption of doses exceeding 400 mcg per day is permissible, given that women with a history of liver and kidney disease also require larger doses. But it should not exceed 1000 mcg per day to avoid side effects.
However, women with high risk factors for fetuses experiencing neural tube defects are advised to consume high doses of folic acid reaching 5 mg per day (for example there is a history of neural tube defects in previous pregnancies or family history of having neural tube defects).
Consult with your obstetrician before taking folic acid supplements far exceeding the recommended daily dose especially if you have other ballast diseases.
That's all, hope you can help
