Why Hurting Yourself Makes You Calm?
I want to ask, why is it that every time there is a problem, sometimes I feel like hurting myself, but when I do it, it feels so relieved, why?
Hello Irma Nur Faizah,
Self harm / self injury is the act of injuring or hurting oneself which is usually not for the purpose of suicide. Someone does this to overcome the anger, frustration, and emotional stress he feels. There is a feeling of relief and a better feeling after doing the self harm. Forms of self harm that can be done by someone include:
Cut the arm with sharp objects Hit the head against the wall Bite the fingers Burn the body with matches / cigarettes / hot objects Scratch the skin (not itch) continuously until the wound Pierced the body parts Signs that can be found in patients who do self-harm are:
Incision scars or burn scars / cigarette burns on the arms or parts of the body that can be reached by the patient Carrying sharp objects Wearing long arms or clothing covering the scars Patients often experience interference in establishing relationships with others / interpersonal Patients feel low self and feel nothing can help him If ever crossed your mind to hurt yourself or even have done self harm, maybe this is your time to ask for help and consult further with a psychologist or psychiatrist. Also share your problem with family or friends that you trust so they can help you. The most important thing is your own intention to get out of this problem and stop the act of self-injury.
Self harm can occur due to poor coping mechanisms (can't stand stress and response to bad stress), impaired controlling and expressing emotions. Risk factors include if you have a friend or family member who is also self harming, victims of physical violence, underlying mental disorders, use of alcohol or illegal drugs. Although self-harm is not intended to end life, someone who does self-harm is very risky to commit suicide in the future.
The handling of patients with self harm generally adjusts to the problems found during the examination. If mental disorders such as depression, borderline personality disorder are found, the disorder will be treated with antidepressant medication with psychotherapy. Various psychotherapies that can be done to improve the condition of self harm are cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindful-based therapy. Thus the explanation from me, hopefully useful.
